Music consumption poll

A little poll about (emerging) music consumption patterns

Author: Christophe Stoll
Date: 12. October 2011

We love music – and we’re sure you do, too. We have discovered a drastic change in our music consumption habits, though. We’d love if you could take a minute and answer the following three simple questions. We’re currently doing research on the topic and would love to hear how your specific music consumption patterns are. If you have something more to let us know (or if you don’t fit into the poll grid), please use the comments and leave remarks or tell us your stories. Thank you!

  1. I’m really curious for the results of these polls!
However I find that a “radiobutton-choice” might lead to a somewhat distorted view. Even though I can clearly identify which of the given options fits my habits the best – my consumption-reality will still be a mix of several of the given options which in my opinion is another relevant aspect of today’s music consumption patterns.
In other words: For me personally listening to music is no longer a somewhat idealistic and relatively strict choice of formats/devices (“vinyl only” etc.) but a use the most suitable format/device for listening in a particular context.

  2. I have to agree with Arne – the radio button is not the best choice… most of the options are very close competitors for the first place in my »most common« behavior ranking.

  3. Came here to comment, and saw that arne already said perfectly how I felt. If you want to know about current trends, allow me to make a choice which reflects my I-don’t-care-which-format music listening pattern.

(In same vein, home and work are not separated for me.)

    We! want! checkboxes! :)

  4. I fear that if it’d be multiple choice, everybody would just tick every box – because it’s true, music consumption patterns are much more diffuse today. but still, if you think about it twice, isn’t there a particular context that sticks out more than the other ones?

  5. @Till: you made your choice in the comment field, didn’t you? :-) I think this will be the best option for a lot of people, but that’s ok. and if they have a favorite for each question, then the polls should do.

I actually also don’t care in my everyday life. but when thinking about it further, I did recognize there is a certain pattern (I just didn’t recognize it, because I didn’t reflect on it any deeper).

  6. Well, there are also possibilities to allow the choice of two – or three buttons to prevent them using all. Or even adding a second question, where you ask for the other secondary ways listening to music.

The best way to ask for it would be the possibility to enter percentage for each format or choices like very often, often, sometimes, almost never, never. I’m not sure which free tool delivers these options. Maybe survey monkey.

Right now I also have the feeling that the results won’t reflect the reality as it should and (could a bit more). And I’m also really looking forward to the results, though the target group is for sure quite narrow.

  7. I’m sure there are much better ways to do this more scientifically correct, but it’s really about getting a gut feeling here – so a narrow target audience is ok, too :)

Also, we’re mostly interested if there are certain main and most popular patterns or contexts in today’s music consumption reality (that’s why we stressed “mainly” or “primarily” in each of the questions). And if they exist, the interesting question would be why and to go into more detail there …

  9. Maybe we should for now all imagine that this was Amen. ;O)

  10. To me context is important. I basically would love to access all of my music from anywhere. However, right now there are only intermediate/transitional services around as neither of the popular streaming services nor the cloud storage apps from Google or Apple can feed my need. I still have to juggle around different formats, players and contexts. From workspace computer to Sonos to turntable to mobile device.

  11. I think although I might listen the most music at work timewise, it might not be the most important time in terms of focused perception. Comfortably at home I have very different expectations to music use than in the office or on the go.
